Corn Yield More Soundness Less Says Iowa Department
Des Moines reports the state department of agriculture finds sound marketable corn has declined while yield per acre rose. Analyzing 37 years of records the agency notes soundness down by over 0.5 percent yearly and yield up about 0.33 bushel per acre annually. Frost incidence rose from 5 percent in 1890s to 20 percent in 1917–1926, with no clear weather trend. Possible phosphorus depletion without adequate replacement is suggested as a factor in maturity impact.
