A mischievous Edgewood boy tampered with the threshing crew, luring them with Eve’s wax and apples. The prank caused most workers to abandon threshing, one man was sent home injured, and the hay in the area disappeared as the crew struggled to regain their poise.
Iowa City residents fear the war department plan to house feed clothe and educate university students during the fall. A barracks may be built by Oct 1 with funding from the state and possible federal reimbursement. Questions arise over married students age unfit or unqualified men and self provision for rations.
Des Moines reports that Democratic leaders plan aggressive campaigning across Iowa in coming weeks attacking Republican incumbents over loyalty and war support. In Second District they target Rep Harry Hull and back Major N D Ely, while Sixth District backers seek Buell McCash against Rep Rahseyer. Hayward Claude Porter may campaign. Gov Harding tours the state with patriotic talks. Election day is Nov 5. older Sept 12 registrants may be drafted. Veteran Bert Marks, 61, is cleared for overseas service after passing exams.
Iowa colleges delay fall openings to align collegiate and military programs. Many institutions announce revised start dates from Sept 9 to Oct 1 with registration and entrance exams listed for each campus. Local note: Rev F K Hargrove becomes Logan mayor following E A Tupper’s resignation.
Thousands of women report relief from sickness and distress during pregnancy by using Mother's Friend. The remedy allegedly softens abdominal muscles, reduces strain on ligaments, and aids natural childbirth. External use only, advertised as safe for over fifty years with a brochure offering guidance for expectant mothers.
Des Moines and Lawler sources report the sale of the Henry Schlatter 246 acre farm near Lawler at 140 dollars an acre to Austin Kinines and Roy Maxfield, linked to the Iowa Homestead controversy. Gov. Harding notes the Pierce defense council matter is closed and urges continued unified war effort.
Iowa City announces first war order from the Franklin Price company for 8,000 bottles of lemon extract valued around 30,000 dollars, about 125 barrels. The firm expects to fill the order in a reasonable time.
Oelwein Iowa September 9 in Rock Island park a 16 by 25 foot service flag with 330 blue stars and two gold stars was unfurled before a large crowd to honor local boys at war. Knights of Columbus council donated the flag and two Civil War veterans opened the ceremony with thanks and praise for the community.
Cherokee South Carolina September 9 Abraham Crissie of Asia has just passed the exams for entry into the United States military service and hopes to join his four sons already over there. Crissie has three boys in the Rainbow division and a fourth in the aviation corps. He mentions a missing trigger finger on his right hand and notes he is left handed.
The Denver Opportunity School trains over 100 young women in automobile operation and repair to free men for army and munitions work. Principal Miss Emily Griffith leads a program supplementing labor department efforts. Some graduates have driven ambulances in France and others now operate jitney buses and assist in farm tasks amid regional labor shortages.
The ad promotes S S S as a universal cure for inherited blood disorders including scrofula. It asserts many cases improved by the treatment, claims no case incurable, and offers free medical advice from a Swift Laboratory representative in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mason City Globe-Gazette and Mason City Times merge effective today. The Times, founded in 1883 and longtime morning paper, published its last issue Sunday. The Globe-Gazette acquires equipment and the Times’ job department, with Le Mars Printing handling printing. The consolidated paper will be issued as an afternoon newspaper. Globe-Gazette, founded in 1858, remains in operation.
Walter Sachse about 21 years old of Gherokes IA was killed when his auto crashed into a bridge abutment near Sutherland during a race. The cars were traveling about 60 mph. his companion escaped with minor injuries. Sachse’s father is a member of the Sachse-Burn corporation, a NW Iowa business group.
Bellevue families Mrs Fred Dickman and Mr Bourkhart Yeager celebrate four sons serving in the U S Army. Dickmans in Georgia and August and John in eastern training camps, Henry to Camp Dodge this week. Yeager brothers Joseph and Albert at Camp Gordon Georgia, Herman en route to France, John headed to Camp Dodge.
In New York the Winston H. Hagen collection sale produced high prices for rare books. John F. Drake, former partner of John W. Gates, paid 4350 dollars for the first edition of Thomas Gray's An Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard from 1751. The author reportedly received no payment from the publishers.
