Funeral services were held at the home of Co. G Williams for Mrs J E B Whipple in Vinton with Rev St C Gully officiating. Born Ellen Thompson in Georgetown Illinois on June 7 1859 she married James E Whipple. The Whipples moved to Vinton about 30 years ago. he died in 1914. Mrs Whipple served as matron of the rest region at the courthouse and was active in Fidella Chapter of the Pythian Sisters. Late Tuesday Sheriff Ruhl was summoned from bed in a separate notice.

Des Moines Iowa reports several soldiers convicted this week at Camp Dodge. F B Penick of Petersburg Indiana received 70 years hard labor for feigning illness and resisting medical examination. Private James E Thompson of St Louis Missouri drew one year in the disciplinary barracks after being found guilty of narcotics use and disorderly conduct in Des Moines on July 26. Private Max Pawlowski of Duluth Minnesota faced five years in federal prison for desertion, but reviewing authorities overturned the sentence and remanded for entry of a different finding.

Grundy Center Iowa September 6 reports Cornelius Frerichs Jr died of wounds suffered August 10 in the Hammel Wood action. He left Grundy Center February 26 among 57 boys to Camp Dodge later joining the 131st infantry. He was 24. Also Kornelius Dirks wounded, Erna Wilms and Shas Snyder marry, real estate transfers to Willhelms and Plepert, death of Mary Ettman four in Beaman area.
