Joliet, Sept. 2, John Gromo, the dishonored honor man who escaped Camp Dunne near Ottawa, was captured in Detroit and sentenced to five years three months more in the Illinois state penitentiary for violating his honor pledge. Warden Allen urged the maximum penalty, saying no greater treachery could be imagined. After his 1912 robbery conviction and a 1915 parole, he ran away July 20 and was returned four days later, then shunned by inmates who fear his escape harmed the honor system and their freedoms.

Right to Buy Ships Deemed Uncontestable by McAdoo
Secretary McAdoo testified before the House naval committee that the United States right to purchase merchant ships of any nationality for neutral uses cannot be disputed by any nation. He dodged diplomatic details when asked about protests from Britain or France. He endorsed the Alexander bill to organize a 40 million corporation to buy, bind, and operate ships, with government as a majority stockholder, noting private capital would not be attracted and the venture may operate at a loss.
