Bishop Blake says Moscow safer than New York or Chicago

Des Moines, Oct. 31. Bishop Edgar Blake of the Methodist Episcopal church told the Women’s Foreign Missionary society that Moscow was quiet and orderly, and that reports of pocket picking there are fabrications. He defended the Moscow church reorganization, said liberal factions dominate, and noted the Soviet government tolerates religion confined to spiritual and social ministry. He warned outside clergy hostile, while inside Russia open opposition has lessened and persecution has intensified devotion.
