Des Moines reports the Washington led effort to mobilize women to husk corn in Iowa has failed. Editors note the low rate of 20 bushels per day, need for board and room, and farmers’ reluctance to employ women workers.
Miss Sybl Campbell of the Girls' Protective association told Des Moines club members that the camp presence creates a sex problem as local girls are drawn by uniforms. She cited out of town visitors seeking adventure and soldiers as factors, noting wages and living costs tied to these pressures. The program praised Des Moines picture shows for wholesome content.
New Hartford Indiana reports the death of Leon Geyer at Cantigny during heavy bombardment. His parents Mr and Mrs J Geyer have been informed. Privates Holifield and Parks sent a message to the captain. both were killed instantly as they left the dugout. Hallfield testifies to Geyers character and service.
Private Christian L. Nissen, 22, the first Cedar Falls man to die in action, was killed on October 5. He joined Camp Dodge with the February 22 contingent and was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Jorgen Nissen of Cedar Falls.
Sioux City Iowa October 31 Public eating house proprietors may face action from the food administration if prices do not reflect reduced portions. Woodbury county official Charles Breun Jr says reduced prices with reduced portions may become a rule. An investigation shows the daily cost of feeding Americans is 47 cents versus $1 in eateries with steak costing 27 cents a pound but served at up to 170 dollars per pound for bacon 38 dollars a pound. Breun urges price alignment with portions and notes fare cards should indicate reduced portions.
Flu cases at Town State college in Ames, Iowa, have subsided with no new infections for a week. The quarantine is lifted though campus remains isolated from the city as the hospital frees pneumonia patients and a 500-man army detachment arrives. The SATC resumes regular drills and the college anticipates football and other sports as a faster return to normal.
Des Moines on Oct 31 reports Superintendent Thornburg plans to require all students above first grade to perform health chores. Daily tasks include washing hands face neck ears cleaning nails and keeping fingers and pencils away from mouth and nose with regular water intake before meals and bed.
