Old Orchard Maine opt 24. A broken exhaust valve nearly blew the Dawn up as it headed toward Europe. The plane returned after five hours aloft. it was found safe today by motor expert JT Harold Kinkaid during a probe into the malfunction.
Old Orchard Maine October 24 Notwithstanding three failures after starting a trans Atlantic flight Mrs Frances Grayson determined to make another attempt to Copenhagen in the monoplane Dawn The motor failed during Sundays flight after more than 450 miles of the outward trip Grayson in command with Brice Goldsborough navigator and Wilmer Stultz pilot sought favorable weather and motor condition before resuming The Dawn backed by a quick fuel release saved from flames near Sable Island before returning to New York about ten hours after takeoff covering 934 miles
Democratic leaders across the South oppose Smith's candidacy citing risk to traditionally Democratic states. Senator Simmons of North Carolina publicly opposed Smith, signaling a regional shift. A majority of Southern senators believe the party should avoid nominating Smith to preserve gains in key states.
Russell DeGon, secretary of Waterloo Retail Merchants association, reports one removed family and eleven new arrivals in Waterloo this week. New residents include G. V. Swartzendurkee at 216 Mullapact and Ruth Lawrence at 60 Franklin, plus C. J. Rorapaugh at 406 Walnut Court Apt, among others. Six towns in southwestern Wisconsin mark their centennial celebrations this year.
A missing team attached to a cement mixer after a collision with a car driven by Anton Jan of Plainfield near Nashua. The mixer is county property, horses owned by Clem Riordan, and the abandoned car of A Colson was left near Floyd. Alcohol bottles found in the machine. no further details on the search outcome.
The funeral of Mrs. M. G. Schultmeyer, who died after a long illness from two strokes, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Waverly Ta. Frances M. Hagen, born 1860 in Eudora Kansas, married H. C. Schultmeyer in 1880 at Waverly. He survives with three sons Ernest in California, Arthur in Emmetsburg, Rudolph in Chicago. A sister in Terre Haute Indiana also survives.
W. W. Guhl aged 19 and husband of a 16 year old wife pleaded guilty in district court to unlawfully disposing of mortgaged property. Judge R. W. Hasner sentenced him to 90 days in jail for selling his mortgaged automobile to a junk dealer.
Bauske and Sutherland will open Uptown cafe tomorrow morning at 323 Fourth Street East in the Terminal building. Entire new equipment has been installed with a grill service and barbecued meats as a feature. The cafe will be open day and night serving lunches meals and short orders and a soda fountain will supply beverages.
Police were called to locate George Bunt son of Mrs Hat tie Bunt 502% Commercial Street who vanished Saturday night barefoot and hatless. Fear for his safety grew as the search used bloodhounds following the scent from his shoes handled by his mother along a river bank route.
Delano Kendall, a few years old, son of Mr and Mrs G B Kendall of 1122 Seventh Street West, was slightly injured when his father's car collided with a car driven by Mrs A G Brown of Cedar Rapids. He was cut by glass after the accident at Independence Avenue and Rhey Street. a parked car owned by H P Clemens was damaged.
Ike Bussey of Evergreen Avenue was charged after police found six half gallon cans of liquor in a garage at the rear of 153 Falls Avenue late Saturday. Detective Hugh Crumrine and Officer William Wilson arrested Bussey, who allegedly rented the garage.
Eara Meeker, age near 98, urged the Oregon Trail association to mint souvenir half dollars. First issues reached Waterloo bankers today, with 6 million coins authorized by the government. Sold at 1.50 dollars each, the extra 50 cents funds trail marking. One side shows an Indian archer. the other, a covered wagon with oxen and driver.
Two men, Grant Hester of Davenport and Walter Chase of Rock Island, were held by police in Clinton Iowa after a motor car crash that injured Cecil Lee of Low Moor and fractured his wife and year-old daughter. Alleged to be intoxicated, they drove on the wrong side, fled the scene, and were found later. Lee's car burned after a hospital visit.

Three Waterloo men faced charges of shooting pheasants out of season after an extra open season day. R. E. Morrison, M. E. Pearsall, and William J. Panzer were arrested Sunday near Cedar Falls with two cock pheasants. All three paid fines totaling ten dollars plus costs in municipal court before Judge George J. Sager.
Backbone state park in Delaware county drew about 2,000 visitors yesterday including several Waterloo residents who enjoyed the oaks in deep red and mahogany tones and the park’s natural beauty.
Florida bound Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Pettit of Haines City are staying with Mr. and Mrs. George B. Rowell in Melrose apartments. They will be joined by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Gallup of Osage and then drive to Florida after spending the summer up north.
Ferdinand Pfiesterer aged 21 and John Krueger aged 18, both of Davenport, were sent to the state reformatory at Anamosa for 10 years each after pleading guilty to breaking into a store at West Amana in Marengo Iowa.

Chicago date Oct 24 An indictment charging murder was to be sought today from the recalled September McHenry county grand jury against William Schumacher 28 held for the slaying of his father Christopher Schumacher 55 last week The confession he allegedly made was the basis for the indictment The shooting occurred while the elder Schumacher was milking at the family farm Motive cited as repeated cruelty toward wife and children The brothers seek alienist aid believing the shooting occurred during a temporary insanity episode
Babe White the world famous human fly will attempt two climbs of the Russell-Lamson Hotel on Wednesday at 2 30 and 7 30 p m He will ascend the facade and perform stunts en route to the roof White has 15 years as a professional daredevil and lists climbs of the Woolworth Building L C Smith Building in Seattle and the Devil's Tower Sundance Wy including an 840 foot 23 minute ascent on Sept 11 1927 He also appeared in Waterloo about two years ago.
Watkins Coal & Lumber Co. has leased the remaining ground between Mullan avenue and First street and Washington street and the C G W tracks from the railway company. The tract 300 feet by 100 feet will be used for lumber storage and added warehouse space. The G W has removed bunk cars and tool sheds. a neat high wire fence is being erected.

In New York a 19 year old youth James Moore explained he slept in the subway to save money while earning 35 dollars weekly as a mortar mixer and doing dishwashing at night. He claimed to have four hundred dollars in the bank and vowed to become rich, but a magistrate sent him to a workhouse after a policeman complained of his language.
Bankers attending the American Bankers association convention in Houston forecast a bright US business outlook. Samuel Stricker aged 78 died at 3 30 a m Sunday at his home 318 Twelfth street west after a long illness of paralysis He was stricken June 20 while visiting his son Earl in Dakota N Dak He was brought to Waterloo Sept 13 and Oct 12 suffered a second stroke He was born June 2 1849 at Naperville Tl He married Delia Snow Aug 27 1876 at Cedar Falls She died Feb 18 1918 Surviving are two sons Earl Dakota and Fred W Stricker Waterloo and a grandson Fred W Stricker Jr Two sons preceded him Funeral services will be Tuesday at 230 p m Petersen Bros chapel Rev F Herbert Moehlman officiating Burial will be in Elmwood
Fifty seven Waterloo high school musicians, 43 from East High and 14 from West High, will join the state high school symphony to play before the Iowa State Teachers association convention in Des Moines Friday evening, Nov. 4. Major Doetzel of Cedar Rapids chairs the committee. About 82 Iowa schools submitted names. roughly 300 will be chosen after the first rehearsal on Nov. 3. The program will be broadcast on WHO. East High and West High list of players follows.
G M GM superintendent of the federal fish hatchery at Manchester Ta and a crew will come to Waterloo early tomorrow to take out young bass from feeding ponds and transfer them to the Cedar river. W A Hendry president of the Izaak Walton league here was notified today and will assist along with A C Willford state president and other locals. Several ponds in the vicinity stocked with bass by the league are now filled with young fish ready to move.
Keokuk Iowa October 24 Kate Arpe was sentenced to six months in Rockwell City and fined 500 dollars for manufacturing liquor. She was arrested here several weeks ago.
Members of the Ys Men’s club host the final dinner for cleanup reports in the Yo M’CA membership drive. The campaign aims to reach 600 members as results are announced tonight. Wells Barnett Jr leads the boys with 15 points, Harold Williams close behind with 12, and the contest ends October 29. Twenty-five boys used free guest passes at Saturday morning classes.
