Carriers Explain Freight Car Shortage Causes

Des Moines report to the state railroad commissioners attributes the freight car famine to a mix of factors not simply car shortages. A surge in produce moving west from Chicago to the Pacific coast, high corn prices, and a demand to move last year’s and the year before crops all press the system. Carriers claim they are moving more freight than ever, but the volume is extraordinary and not a lack of ability. Also notes the death of G F Frontress, longtime Illinois Central railroad agent, and a brief mention of elevator attendants history in New York City.
