The Iron Gates of the Danube and its early canalization
A National Geographic War geography bulletin describes the Iron Gates defile on the Danube from its origin near Ada and Kaléh to Belgrade, noting the 1840 canal project by a Hungarian engineering company that removed rock, created a ten foot deep year round channel, and enabled steamers from Budapest to the Black Sea. It recounts the opening celebration with Emperor Francis Joseph, King Alexander of Serbia, and King Carol I, and explains that high water submerges the rock gates while lower water reveals treacherous currents before Orsova.
