Commercial Fertilizer Increases Potatoes Yields in Buchanan Plots
Lamont, Oct 19. Three potato plots in Buchanan County sponsored by Victor Oss Smith Hughes Baxter here Glenn Bradley J H Brown and Marvin Fernald in cooperation with the Buchanan County Farm Bureau showed unusually good yields this year as commercial fertilizer applied to test plots on three farms increased yields. On the Brown farm 500 pounds of 4-16-4 fertilizer gave an average 455 bushels per acre, part of the piece guided 500 bushels to the acre. The 10-4 fertilizer is 4 percent nitrogen 16 percent phosphorus and 4 percent potash. Seed were Red River Cobblers obtained via extension service Town State College. One reason yields were heavy was fallow land through 1927 and good subsoil moisture. At Ordinarily two years to produce one crop in Iowa, the drought was survived. Potatoes on the Glenn Bradley farm yielded 267 bushels per acre. 500 pounds of 4-26-4 fertilizer boosted to 947 bushels per acre. Bradley also planted Red River Cobblers with good drainage after two previous potato years. On Marvin Fernald’s farm fertilizer did not greatly raise yield. best were 451 bushels Cobblers and 310 bushels Early Ohio. Hollandale seed produced 390 bushels per acre. Fernald had last fall manure applied. Jesup consolidated school project taught agricultural students two points: Cobblers outperform Early Ohio in this locale. Claire Zuck and Gus Horn were Jesup students in the boys and girls 200 bushel 310-state plot. L Piteh Iowa State College potato specialist says Cobblers average 75 bushels more per acre than rivals.
