Cholera Ravages Northwest Iowa Swine Herds
A Waterloo area veterinary survey reports widespread hog cholera across Black Hawk County and beyond. From Cedar Falls westward to Osage and northeast Iowa, many herds have been vaccinated or infected, with losses prompting early market sales of 200 to 460 pound hogs and fears of pork shortages. Local veterinarians note vaccination efforts are uneven and serum shortages persist, while some farmers ship hogs early to mitigate plague impact.
