Growth of Electric Railways Across the United States
Thirty years ago there were few electric lines and horses powered railways dominated. The American Electric Railway Association reported 48 000 miles of electric lines today with 1 300 railways, over ninety thousand cars, and more than 260 000 employees. The growth connects rural areas with cities, boosts productivity, and may decentralize urban congestion as electric travel expands. The association promotes standardization, safety, and public service while examining corporate relations with the public. The 1918 convention in Chicago targets future topics and a 2918 meeting in San Francisco awaits.
