Moré Students for Ministy Now Than in Prewar Years

New York reports enrollment of new men for the ministry at theological seminaries is rising beyond prewar levels. Conservative seminaries show the largest early gains, with heavy southern enrollments and high standards noted. Protestant bodies including Episcopal, Baptist, Disciples of Christ, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian show strong numbers, while smaller seminaries gain modestly. The trend suggests permanent growth in ministerial forces nationwide. The total ordained ministers in America nears 250,000, about 35,000 fewer than churches, prompting calls to focus on spiritual duties.
