Des Moines reports Iowa may lose sugar entirely for weeks or a month before year’s end as the Food Administration works to cover a 2.56 million pound deficit against the September allotment. Retailers are asked to enforce strict limits, with two pounds per person for canning and heightened conservation to stretch supplies.
Three soldiers from the depot brigade die as Spanish influenza spreads at Camp Dodge. Quarantines halt activity at Camp Dodge and Fort Des Moines with 500 cases reported. Medical staff conduct two daily exams. gauze masks issued, 20 000 expected, and several local facilities nearly closed. Guards placed at railways and camp perimeters.
Japanese ship owners foresee reduced wartime prosperity and aim to expand into foreign trade by forming their own importing and exporting companies to withstand postwar slackening markets.

Desa Moines October 2. Chris Koester and C. L. Coffey, workers at a local saddlery, were mortally injured when a hand grenade exploded as they examined it. The grenade, brought by Coffey and said to be a gift, detonated after Koester pricked it with a knife. two other workers were injured.
