Brigadier General Marchand, famed for Fashedn exploits, was wounded in the abdomen by a shell fragment in the Champagne district during the current hostilities. Once a war colonel who led French forces at Fashoda, he later refused to retire without government orders and was recalled in December 1895 after diplomatic talks with Britain. He left the army some time ago but offered his services again at the outbreak of the European war and was appointed colonel.
