Kansas Quail Like Sparrows in Iowa
Kansas quail numbers in southern regions approach sparrow levels in Iowa. Burr Lichty of Smith Lichty & Fillman Co. reports two weeks of hunting with a bird dog that found, pointed, and retrieved birds. Lichty hunted with Tom Galey using 20 gauge guns, avoiding ground shots. Each farm yielded two or three coveys of 25 to 45 birds. two to three birds per covey were fired. Daily bag limit was 10, but never reached. The South Kansas season lasts 10 days and quail aren’t scarce, while the Izaak Walton league backs wildlife breeding efforts.
