Prosecutor and defense aimed to gauge juror attitudes toward a Black female defendant in a liquor nuisance trial. Each venireman denied bias and affirmed equal consideration for Simmons’s testimony. Judge Boies overruled a challenge from counsel and questioned one venireman about prior complaints in liquor cases.
The lever served as a witness for the state, Mr. Wyant answered in the negative to both interrogatories. The case is expected to continue the larger part of three days. The state will call five or six witnesses and the defense twelve.
Waterloo’s representation to the thirtieth annual Y M C A convention of older boys of Iowa left this morning for Des Moines. Hundreds of Iowa Y M C A members are expected in the city from noon until Sunday night as the event concludes. The fifty-second annual Iowa State Y M C A convention is held in Des Moines during these days with a dinner for war work secretaries at the auditorium tonight.
A county auditor reports a large number of hunters licenses issued here with about 3,000 sold at one dollar each. Licenses are held by four subagents outside the auditor’s office, totaling 3,375 licenses in circulation and awaiting remittance. The auditor notes a substantial sum collected from these sales.
Revival meetings start Sunday evening November 28 in Hudson Iowa with Rev W H Bennett and Prof Joe Wilson directing. Sessions run 7 30 p m daily for three weeks and three Sunday morning programs with a special 2 20 Sunday afternoon service.
