Big Ten protein mix boosts pig gains at Iowa State College
Ames Ya Nov 19 Three autos carried farmers from Dyersville Delhi and Manchester to the swine feeders' day at Iowa State College. John M Evvard led trials on a new ten part protein mix fed with corn and minerals. The big ten mixture produced faster growth and higher profits than the Trinity blend, with pigs reaching 380 pounds about three weeks sooner and feed costs lower at 4.58 per hundredweight versus 5.52 for the Trinity. Cross breds excelled but did not outpace first generation gains, and ground oats showed mixed profitability depending on processing costs.
