Foot and Mouth Disease overview in cattle and other animals
An overview of foot and mouth disease based on the Journal of the American Medical Association describes its highly infectious nature, primary impact on cattle sheep and swine with mouth and foot lesions, incubation periods of three to five days, prodromal fever and weight loss, possible severe forms with rapid death, virus transmission via direct contact and contaminated objects, and measures such as pasteurization to mitigate milk borne spread. It notes the virus can persist months when cool and damp but is destroyed by drying heat and chemical disinfectants, and mentions historical experiments by Loffler and Frosch establishing a filterable virus.
