Grundy Center notices honor fallen and assignments
Grundy County records mark Helmuth Aukes killed in action on October 24 as part of Company Avs of the 351st Infantry. He was 28, the fifth county death in that regiment but the only one in action. Other local deaths were from disease. Also noted are nurse reserve assignments for Grace Smith and Ruth Springer, with Springer headed to Camp Wheeler and Smith to a Buffalo hospital. A house on the F Decknadel farm north of Reinbeck burned Saturday, with no salvage possible. occupant Hans Aagerd.
Soldier Bernard Carr Died in France
Bernard Carr of Lamont died of pneumonia while on duty with the 88th division in France. He left Camp Dodge May 27 1918 and sailed for Europe in August with his unit. He is survived by his parents three sisters and four brothers. Influenza is linked to other recent local deaths.
