Keokuk Gates Are Greatest Engineering Marvel
Keokuk Iowa November 18. The new Keokuk lock gates rise as a Mississippi River engineering triumph. Weighing about a million pounds, each two leaf gate spans 115 feet with unprecedented buoyancy chambers to relieve stress. They resist 5.5 million pounds of water while opening like a home front door, powered by a water wheel and a 40 horsepower engine.

Water Power Dam Lock Plans Shape Great Mississippi Navigation
A massive water power dam project near Keokuk will feature a lock enabling river traffic to pass the largest dam on earth. The United States government would acquire the lock and adjacent rock upon completion, funded entirely by the water power company, with tolls to be paid for damming the Mississippi. The suit by Mrs. Bird in federal court challenges this arrangement, naming Glen and J. J. Farmer among the defendants and alleging misrepresentation in book sales to a New Haven millionaire.
