Election returns from Illinois and Kansas pieces show Hughes and Wilson contests in multiple counties. Weather touted as favorable for heavy balloting with about two million registered in Illinois and expectations of around one million votes, including substantial female participation for president and vice president.
The record lists 1908 presidential tallies for Taft, Bryan, Debs and others, plus Prohibition and Peoples candidates with votes. For governor results show Garrett and White leading and a scattering total. In 1912 Woodrow Wilson carried the state with Taft and Debs also on ballots. Clarke led Republican runoff with Dunn and others following.
Des Moines reports a record heavy turnout despite rain with polls open until 7 PM. State guardsmen in Texas vote under Civil War law. returns telegraphed to Des Moines. Few irregularities noted. Newton questioned precinct residency rule. Marshalltown sees more than one third of expected vote by 11 AM.
Des Moines reports Democratic gubernatorial candidate E. T. Meredith pledges funds to probe illegal voting and prosecute offenders regardless of election outcome. Police arrest the first illegally registered voter today, Thomas Gillespie, in Des Moines.
Naval actions report a British submarine hit two Kaiser class dreadnoughts in the North Sea. Other dispatches claim Austrian submarine and Italian destroyer sunk in a night duel while Austro-Hungarian forces raid Pola with destroyers, torpedoes, and bombardments.
Charles Brann Waghen Republican presidential candidate voted ballot No 13 at 7 03 am in the Victoria laundry polling place near the Astor hotel. Five booths, movie cameras crowded the room as Waghen observed the straight ticket then returned to the hotel amid a crowd.
New York reports a record election night fete with Broadway hotels restaurants and theatres preparing for a grand celebration. Managers expect high demand for reservations and plan to display returns on screens in multiple reception rooms as crowds gather for the results.
Partial city and county returns from Topeka Kansas Kansas City Wichita Fort Scott and Marshfield Massachusetts reveal Hughes and Wilson trading slim leads. In Topeka 25 of 32 precincts counted at noon show Roosevelt six Wilson four. Kansas City nine of 108 Wyandotte precincts report Hughes and Wilson with small margins. One third of Wichita precincts tallied by 2 45 pm list Hughes ahead of Wilson. Fort Scott two precincts report Wilson. Marshfield totals show 153 to 122 with unknown candidate totals.
Voters in Waterloo turned out in force during morning hours as rain threatened, with noon counts showing high turnout across all precincts. First ward and second ward precincts reported hundreds cast by 11 to 12 o clock, with total registrations listed and ongoing counts reflecting a strong election day pace.
The Evening Courier announces telegraph and telephone updates on election results with three long whistles signaling Wilson victory and eight signaling Hughes. Night signals, rapid bulletins from the Courier building, and special car service will convey results from 6 p.m. onward. Subcribers, shut-ins, and agents are urged to stay tuned and place extra copy orders.
