Democrats Fighting to Retain Virginia In Today's Election
Virginia voters faced a sharp choice between continuing Democratic leadership or backing a coalition that split from the party after last year’s presidential nominating process. Dr. John Garland Pollard urged unity and revival of Democratic rule, while coalition candidate Dr. William Moseley Brown promised a reform sweep, criticizing machine rule and election Laws. In New York City, violence flared at polls as Mayor James J. Walker, a Democrat, faced a likely landslide reelection amid competing claims from Republicans and third parties. Officials appealed for state police aid to restore order as turnout rose, with forecasts favoring Walker. Also, former gridiron star Dr. B. E. Little, 61, died at his Minburn home from heart disease, after a long coaching career at the University of Iowa.
