Mayor Thompson condemned over street meeting permits dispute

The protest over Evangelist Lawrence Greenwood’s open air meeting at Fourth and Lafayette led Mayor I C Thompson to confront the clergy man and escort him to police headquarters. A crowd near city hall criticized the mayor’s action while Greenwood claimed police permission had been granted to hold the gathering and to direct traffic wrongly. The mayor later withdrew objections after learning Chief Leighton had issued the permit. Reverend John Bunyan Smith said he secured permission from the mayor and that Chief Leighton approved directing the car wrong way. The mayor said protests from business leaders forced action and announced future street meeting permits would require his office approval.
