Delightful Informality of 1860 Waterloo Balloting

Reminiscences describe crude voting methods in Waterloo in 1860. Voters handed ballots through hotel veranda windows to judges, with no Australian ballot. Parties printed their own ballots and electioneers followed voters to the polls. Party fervor ran high as editors printed partisan columns and urged vigilance, with calls to keep the ballot box pure and to report results early.

Halloween Night Brings Cheer and Few Incidents

Across the city, pranks were minor and mostly harmless, a barricade was removed, porch fixtures reported missing, and decorative windows survived the storm with chalk designs. A missing porch step request and a lost boy incident near Seventh Street reflect typical Halloween mischief, while a coat and a car stolen earlier were noted for police records.
