Iowa Cities Launch Wide Building Programs Amid War Frame
A wave of public works spreads across Iowa as wartime optimism grows. Cities including Council Bluffs, Iowa City, Tipton, Des Moines, and Belmond begin major projects from hospitals and schools to paving and utilities. Major items include a $4,000,000 University of Iowa hospital, new branch post offices, paving roads, and power line upgrades. Local bodies vote bonds for gyms, schoolhouses, and public facilities while utilities expand to Buck Grove and Ossian.
