The Pullens and a mysterious Chinese chest
The Pullens life seems ordinary until a Chinese lacquer chest arrives purchased on a whim. Fred and Elsie Pullen uncover a hidden parchment inside the chest, revealing Chinese writing and a potential clue to their tale, as neighbors speculate about Julia and Sam Carlile.
Untranslated Scrap Stirs Suspicion In Local Home
Pullen and his wife puzzle over a scrap that might reveal meaning but cannot read it. He mentions a Chinese reader but doubts translation and plans to see a man tomorrow. The doorbell interrupts as editor notes hint at forthcoming strange events in a continuing tale.
