Farm Bill Defeat Narrowed in Senate Vote Over Veto Override

Washington May 26 A Senate roll call shifted as four Republicans including a presidential hopeful switched to oppose overriding President Coolidge's veto of the McNary Haugen farm relief bill. Despite 28 Democrats and 20 Republicans backing passage, the measure failed to secure the necessary two thirds, dampening hopes for farm aid this session. Senators McNary Brookhart and others defended the bill while critics argued constitutional concerns and the veto line.
