Reserve Banks Expected to Raise Rediscount Rate
Washington May 23. Financial circles forecast a rediscount rate increase by principal Federal Reserve banks following the Federal Reserve Board advisory council recommendation that banks be allowed to raise their rate to 6 percent. New York and Chicago institutions were said to have requested the privilege. The aim is to align rediscount rates with prevailing commercial money rates to improve financial conditions and hasten a safer, lower rate structure to aid commerce and agriculture. The policy would continue the board’s Feb. 5 agreement that too much credit has been absorbed in speculative channels.
