Grade Crossings May Disappear Says Lewis
Des Moines May 20 Dwight N Lewis of the Iowa railroad commission, fresh from a Chicago meeting, predicts uniform danger signals nationwide but cautions that eliminating grade crossings entirely is too costly for states and railroads. He cites 17 000 crossings in Iowa, with elimination costs of 40 000 to 50 000 per crossing, urging gradual removal and better sight lines while states idealize harmonized signals.
