Convicts Pursue Education by Mail in Iowa Prisons
Des Moines reports inmates in Iowa penal institutions are expanding study via correspondence courses from eastern schools. At Fort Madison and Anamosa reformatories, many convicts ranging from burglars to murderers enroll in mechanical, electrical, commercial, and academic subjects. Warden Hollowell notes sincerity and ambition to “go straight” after release, with some using prison shop earnings to pay tuition and lights kept on late for study.
