Novelty Wire Works Leads World in Hanger Production
Waterloo factory Novelty Wire Works at 304-161 Falls avenue, run by Mrs. J. D. Rice and son, J. D. Rice, claims the most wire garment hangers produced globally. Only Detroit and Waterloo plants exist in the United States, with annual output reaching nearly 100 million hangers for eastern and southern jobbers, plus carpet heaters and other novelties. The plant uses about 500 tons of wire yearly, spanning roughly 5,000 miles if laid end to end, and produces about 30 hanger types for men and women. The firm shifted from wooden to wire hangers and operates year round with eight to twelve workers. If Pittsburgh’s rate reductions end, Waterlaw and other plants could gain cost advantages via cheaper steel and iron.

Bamboo-Concrete Houses Stand in Costa Rica Quake
The Costa Rican cities of San Jose and Alajuela suffered heavy damage from the March parthanakee. About $2.6 million in property damage is estimated, with most homes in San Jose needing repairs or rebuilding. Cartago escaped major damage. The bamboo encased in concrete construction blends timber economy with reinforced concrete solidity, offering quake resistant features observed after earlier earthquakes.
