County road bonds may be paid from primary road funds
Black Hawk County reduced its outstanding road bonds to 1 135 000. If voters approve a 1 000 000 additional issue or a 100 000 000 state issue fails, the bonds and interest would still be paid from the primary road fund sourced by motor license fees and gasoline tax. Not all of the 1 000 000 may be issued, used only as needed, with state bonds potentially enabling cross state trunk line paving. Nine counties have yet to bond.

Bean crop boosts income and prep for planting
Farmers describe beans as a good paying proposition as plowing nears completion for planting. Fred Bowen operated a tractor late into the night turning acres and preparing two planters and two disks for operation. Bowen notes narrow cultivation and uses a combine for beans and wheat with a corn picker purchased last year. Bowen’s crew husked 220 acres of corn, hauled by four wagons, while Brock maintains hogs and cows with calves sold. William Bloemker, among Bowen’s workers, husked 1,722 bushels of corn last fall and 386 more for feeders, hauling daily to Garrett to market. Dec. 11. Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
