Des Moines reports indicate gradual freight service improvement after private management resumed March 1. Carloads from the western coast move faster, but the midwest must receive more cars to haul grain and live stock. Interstate plan urges railroads to concentrate repairs on their own cars to reduce delays. Senate railroad leaders plan inquiries into car supply for farming regions.
Sioux City Iowa May 13 Scores of families were forced to leave Homer Nebraska 15 miles southwest of here at 10 a m yesterday when Omaha creek rose above its banks due to a cloud burst near Hubbard Nebraska during the night There was no loss of life but there was considerable property damage before the waters began to recede at noon The city is cut off from rail traffic by washouts Coburh and Jackson Nebraska report railroad washouts Numerous washouts are reported in South Dakota the most serious one being destruction of a new bridge on the Milwaukee road near Scotland Waters are rising high in the Floyd river between Sioux City and LeMars and four railroads entering the city from that direction will be cut off RELEASE 5 000 PIGEONS DeWitt Iowa May 18 Fifty groups of carrier pigeons containing 100 birds each have been sent here to be released Sunday morning at 11 o clock It is expected the releasing of the 5 000 birds will prove a big attraction.

William L. McCandless, superintendent of the Chicago-Omaha division serial mail service, was instantly killed four miles south of Oskaloosa Iowa when his airplane collapsed in heavy winds during an inspection flight. Pilot H H Johnson was badly cut but expected to recover. The DeHavilland plane with a Liberty motor was badly damaged.
Paddy Slelio and Jim McAuley, once Waterloo players, rose to Pacific Coast league prominence after brief stints with Pittsburgh. Their careers cooled there, but recent moves have revived their standing as standout infielders, illustrating a comeback arc in professional baseball.
Fort Dodge Ind May 13 Construction of eight miles of paving planned for 1920 progresses rapidly City Engineer Charles Reynolds says curb and grading on Third Street north to Eleventh Avenue then to Seventh Street and north to the fair grounds completed paving with asphaltic concrete will start when weather permits A block of curb and gutter and half mile of grading on Twenty second Street South will be paved from Fifth Avenue north to Fifteenth Avenue If completed this year the eight miles will be more than ten times last year's three fourths mile progress Resurfacing on Second Avenue South and 27 blocks in the ordinance of necessity are not included in the eight miles contract from last December.
Davenport Iowa May 13 Howard Jerold Harris 25 a tailor was charged with robbing Miss Viola Ballhorne after she died of about 300 dollars worth of clothing. He confessed to police and said he gave the clothes to his sister as a Christmas present. Most stolen items were recovered at the sister’s home in Inwood Iowa.
E. D. Dickson, a West Grove farmer, sued W. H. Yates and others in Davis county court at Bloomfield. He accuses 36 men from West Grove of entering his home in 1917, assaulting him and forcing contributions to the American Red Cross. The espionage sentence for Dickson in federal court is not yet pronounced. Dr Whallenberger ad in Waterloo Hotel Russell-Lamson event on May 20.

Mrs Ida B Short a wealthy Richmond resident is sued by her sister Mrs Phylory Doten of Lincoln Neb for 12000 damages. The petition claims letters to sister Mrs Minute Boone of Richmond Va accused Mrs Doten of neglecting their mother during her last illness and death in January, alleging the mother was crucified.
