Fewer Forests Higher Waters Tipping Point in Mississippi Floods

Washington May 9 National Geographic Society bulletin notes that fewer forests and more development raise flood stages in the Mississippi system. Population growth, forest loss, and urban drainage speed runoff, while levees confine water, creating higher peaks downstream. The Atchafalaya channel drains flood water to the Gulf, yet levees, towns, railways, and industry inland intensify risk. The river drains about a third of the continental United States, with Memphis and Vicksburg facing higher stages than New Orleans.
