Rain floods and washouts disrupt rail traffic in Iowa

Torrential weekend rains drenched the Waterloo region and nearby areas, causing multiple washouts in trackbeds and delaying trains on the Cedar Rapids and Rock Island lines. Cedar Falls reported 2.96 inches of rain, water backed onto curbs, and roads submerged in spots. Center Point, Urbana, and Shellsburg saw washouts, with crews using crushed rock and cinders to reestablish lines. Water covered waiting areas and motorists faced 18 inch deep surges on roads south of Washburn.
