Waterworks Board Adds Beauty to Waterloo's Bathing Beach
The Waterloo Waterworks Board funds a picturesque pumphouse near the Cedar River park by the bathing beach. John P. Berry led the floral and architectural enhancements while Miller Artesian Well Co completed a second artesian well, 1,378 feet deep, flowing until installation. Construction required terraced foundations nine feet above grade to prevent flood damage.

Waterworks Pumphouse At Waterloo Receives Ornate Redesign
The Waterloo waterworks terrace features a three foot back tier and a new eight foot wide cement walk circling the building designed by the water department. Howard Hurry drafted plans with H. A. Maine Co constructing the edifice, a two color pressed brick exterior with glazed tile interior and a three floor height. A 355 foot iron tower tops the structure for handling machinery. The grounds were landscaped with flower beds, shrubs like snowberry and barberry, and a rustic cement seat shaded by a grape vine. A hydrant and drinking fountain serve the public, and Well No 4 will supply 1,400,000 gallons daily for the city.
