Fruit Crops Shine Despite Cold Spells In Iowa
Spring's cool spell left minimal frost damage in many orchards across Iowa while apples plums and cherries show strong prospects. Growers report light frost impact in several counties with strawberries mostly killed. some regions fear yield drops but prices may rise due to trimmed supplies. Experts say southern and central Iowa faced more damage than northern areas and forecast a potentially solid overall crop with careful spray schedules and favorable late-season conditions.

Choice of Market Influences Return on Iowa Livestock
Ames May 7 Starting with one first livestock shipping association in 1904 the number grew to 695 in Iowa by 1925 and these associations handle 25 percent of all livestock sold in the state. About half of Iowa farmers ship all or part of their livestock via cooperative shipping associations with every county having at least one. Hog shipments comprise 84 percent of cooperative business. Market knowledge and timing shape selling success, as livestock move to 60 markets with prices varying by market. From 1920 to 1927 hogs shipped to terminal markets fell 16 percent while local markets rose, and truck use is replacing rail where facilities are poor and enabling direct farm-to-market shipments, though overuse can hinder grading and sorting development.
