Senate Deadlock on Mellon Case Delays Action
In Washington on May 3, the Senate Judiciary Committee failed to agree on how to proceed in the Mellon case after a sixth day of hearings. The panel debated disclosure of Mellon's deposition in a civil suit with the Aluminum Company of America and considered inviting Mellon to testify on unclear points. The session followed a brief House debate as tariff debate continued. Republicans and Democrats remain closely divided, delaying a decision. A separate item noted Leslie Shaw, former Treasury Secretary, admitted stock ownership during his tenure, cited in debate over Andrew Mellon’s eligibility amid a 1900s anti-stockholding rule.
