National Guard Prominence in Future U S Army Planning
Washington reports say the general staff backs a substitute system centering on a large national guard to complement a small regular army. A St Louis convention will push guard interests as veterans call for a democratic, citizen-soldier force. Experts foresee two months of annual training, a skeleton regular army, and a nationwide guard of at least 350000, potentially forming divisions and a field army ready to mobilize.
