Black limestone rock eyed for road building in Iowa mines
Des Moines reports that waste black limestone rock from Lucas Marion and Monore counties coal mines is suitable for road building. A crushing unit at Meleher Marion county processes 860 tons of rock with thousands more available. State highway officials and Ames geologists favor its use, citing high crush strength and low absorption. The Central Iowa Fuel Company promoted tests after a pier in a mine withstood extreme pressure, spurring plans to submit the material to state geologists for evaluation.
