State board struggles with coal and freight cost rise
Des Moines reports the state board of control pays higher coal and freight charges for meals and goods for 16 state institutions. Despite lower food contract prices versus last fall, freight increases cost about 175000 for coal shipments over two years, with coal costs up to 600000 in one item. The 1920 22 biennial forecast predicted total freight and coal rise near 600000, though intrastate coal rate cuts may ease the burden. The board aims to trim purchases this spring, while fuel, repairs, and new buildings drive rising living costs.
