Seek Chest of Gold Buried by Officer Who Fled Indians
PONCA CITY Okla Forty thousand dollars in gold is the prize for a Kansan led dig the first since 1900 when A G Hennessey failed to locate the chest rumored buried near Big Spring Nicholas Spring on John Ford’s farm in Kingman County Kansas about 30 miles north of the Oklahoma line. The chest reportedly held army pay amid Kiowa or Comanche war activity and was buried after an ambush that killed the paymaster and his men. Old plainsmen and scouts keep the tale alive as bands of Indians periodically search the site with help from a former Comanche chief who died years ago.
