Alfalfa shipped to feed in dairy rations across Iowa counties
Sixty three carloads of alfalfa hay were shipped into Black Hawk county this winter, feeding dairy cows that purchase from Kansas Nebraska and Wyoming. Waterloo received 25 carloads followed by Cedar Falls with 15. Other towns plus Bremer and Fayette counties reported smaller lots. Total cost about $21,000, with hay priced around $24 a ton. County agents note potential gains from growing alfalfa locally and lime costs to prepare land for the first year could be offset by future yields.
