Garden soil prep tips from National Garden Bureau

The National Garden Bureau advises gardeners to avoid heavy tilling and instead use shallow spading or a depth of about eight inches for most gardens. For light soils a fork may suffice, with organic matter and manure added if available, while deeper rooted crops like asparagus benefit from richer preparation. Mulching helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds, and light surface stirring after rains aids germination.
