Des Moines Girl Rescued From Home to White Slave Ring

Hessie Hart a 17 year old Des Moines high school sophomore disappeared March 13 and was lured by a woman into a scheme offering foot positions and money. She traveled to Pittsburg and to Joplin under an assumed name before being found by Matron Sanford and returned to her parents. Investigators note Italian suspects in Pittsburg Kansas area and expect arrests.

Chained Convicts Escape From Train Near Centerville

Two prisoners chained together aboard a Pullman car bound for Leavenworth escaped by leaping from a window near Centerville. Guards at each end of the car pursued as the Golden State Limited slowed by bad track. Authorities believe the fugitives fled into the night, hampered by chains and with one window left open.

Illinois Livestock Quarantine Raised in Des Moines

March 28 reports say the state veterinary health commission, led by Dr. J. Gibson, revoked the quarantine order against the state of Illinois for mouth disease. The board did not decide on accrediting herds for exams to prove freedom from disease. In Webster City, Judge Wright set aside a divorce from last week, citing the brother of the plaintiff and travel concerns. The original divorce had been granted on grounds of incompatibility. the decree was paused as the parties’ circumstances were reviewed.

Buck Re elected Iowa Falls Mayor

Buck was reelected mayor of Iowa Falls by a large majority. The past two years are endorsed by taxpayers. Will of T. Z. Fitzpatrick filed after fatal crash

In Dubuque on March 25 the will of the late T. Z. Fitzpatrick, killed with his wife in a March 19 automobile accident, leaves most of about 106000 dollars to his widow and 20000 to stenographer Miss Gerionda Crawshaw. Small bequests go to siblings, including 500 dollars to Father J. J. Fitzpatrick of Marshalltown for church purposes. A legal dispute may arise over which spouse died first as both were found dead under their overturned car.

Death of Mrs. Sarah Belcher at La Porte City

In La Porte City on March 28, Mrs. Sarah Belcher aged 84 died at the home of Mr and Mrs Dan Belcher after weeks of illness. Born in Pennsylvania December 10 1836, she came to Indiana and later married twice, leaving two children Charley Parsons and Edna Fullan. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm from the Belcher residence, with Rev A W Henke officiating, burial in West View Cemetery.

Death by Hanging Shocks Irwin Family During War Times

John Henry Tessen, 75, of Irwin area, reportedly brooded over lack of news from two sons in the German army and died by his own hand Saturday night. His body was found in a second floor room upon the family’s return home. He leaves eight sons and daughters.
