Coal Prices Head Upward as Strain and Rates Rise
Des Moines reports State Railroad Commissioner Charles Webster warns miners pay raises will lift consumer prices. Freight rates jump 50 percent Sept. 1, with car shortages worsening railroad service. A possible coal miners strike April 1 could affect next year’s scale, prompting early storage advised for public and private buyers. Chicago notes adds $2 per ton for eastern coal and 80 cents for southern Illinois coal.
