Coal Prices Drop In Waterloo Market Amid Freight Costs

Coal prices have fallen 25 to 50 cents a ton in the past ten days in Waterloo. Dealers fear further drops are limited by miners' wage scales and high freight rates. Southern Illinois coal is about 10.75 dollars per ton, northern Illinois 9 dollars, Kentucky 15.50. Freight and war tax add roughly 42 dollars per ton for local shipments, with Pocahontas coal taxed around 6.47. A dealer notes only a large wage cut and lower shipping costs could drive prices down further before April 1922.
