School fight over salary cut for state superintendent begins
Des Moines reports a bill by Senator White to reduce the state superintendent’s salary from 4000 to 2400 and deputy from 2500 to 2000, aiming to express disapproval of department policies on rural and vocational schooling amid a confirmation battle. The move arises from opposition to the department’s administration and its emphasis on rural schooling and university alignment. The bill, from the Johnson-Iowa district, seeks an alibi amid a broader political clash over public education direction.
