Pullets And Proper Culling For Profitable Laying Flocks
Washington March 28. The season to raise chicks to replenish pantry flocks is here. Pullets form the most profitable part of the laying flock and a balanced stock should include at least half pullets. Proper management from brooding to feeding boosts early hatched chicks which are most profitable. Builders should prepare a stove brooder in a colony house, 10 by 20 feet, with 15 to 30 feet spacing between houses. Feed early in small portions for the first days then regular rations, using egg-based mash and dry feeds. Two week olds get a dry mash with oats bran corn meal and meat syrup, plus middlings. Commercial chick feed can be added. milk or dried milk as available. By one month give intermediate chick grain, later switch to wheat and cracked corn, with feeding two to three times daily.
